Pope Gregory XIII commissioned the linking of the built-up area of Bastia by the bridge over the Chiascio to facilitate the movement of pilgrims on their way to Santa Maria d’Angeli. . The present structure is the result of 19th-century alterations using materials obtained from the demolition of the Monastery of S. Paolo. It has recently been enlarged, adapting it to the needs of traffic, by building a lateral pedestrian walkway.
